About American Football
American football is America 's favorite sport outranking even baseball and basketball. This game is played on a rectangular field by two opposing teams with an inflated leather ball that is roughly oval in shape. The object of the game is to score points by carrying the ball across the opponent's goal line or by kicking the ball through the opponent's goal posts. The sport requires muscle, brawn and stamina to withstand the physical onslaught of the opposing team. It requires strategy and agility to get the football across the field with all the brawn blocking the team's every move. Faultless execution of strategy and blocks requires absolute teamwork to win the game. American football is a collision sport. The high level of physical contact makes it more dangerous than other major American team sports. Players wear a good deal of special equipment, such as a padded plastic helmet, shoulder pads, hip pads and knee pads. These protective “paddings” were introduced decades ago and constantly improved to help minimize lasting injuries to players. The fascination for this highly physical sport has spread worldwide. It is played by professionals and amateurs (generally male high school and college students). There are more than 100 teams in Britain . The game is also played in Canada , both as an amateur status game between colleges, and professionally. It is also played in Australia , New Zealand , and Europe and is possibly most popular in Italy . European club championships are held in August in a different European centre each year and teams play for the coveted Euro Bowl. |
