The National Football League and the Super Bowl

The 32-team National Football League (NFL) is the most popular and only major professional American football league. These teams are divided into two conferences called the National Football Conference and the American Football Conference. Each conference has 16 teams and they are sub-divided into three divisions: East, West and Central.

Starting in September, the teams play 16 games and from these the best teams are decided. These teams, plus six other teams with the next best records, play elimination games called playoffs, Only teams from the same conference play each other.

There is one team left from each conference after the playoffs. They meet in the last game of the season, the Super Bowl, held on the last Sunday in January. It draws more than 60,000 fans and is watched by more than 130 million television viewers in the United States .
