Basic Steps in Shooting

To shoot an arrow with a bow, an archer first assumes the correct stance . He stands upright with one foot each side of the shooting line. Body position must be consistent with no shifting of weight and leaning of body. Nock the arrow by pushing the nock of the arrow firmly onto the bowstring. The arrow shaft is placed on the arrow rest. The bowstring and arrow are held with three fingers ( drawing hand ). Index finger is placed above the arrow and next two fingers below. Curl the fingers around the bow string. Place the bow hand into the grip of the bow. Push out with the bow arm to set the hand position into the bow grip, and then raise the bow arrow and drawing arm together. From this position ( pre - draw ), use the back muscles to pull the arrow to the anchor point. The anchor is where the hand is positioned on the jaw and the bowstring touches the face. Tension is sustained in the back muscles and the bow arm is adjusted to straighten the sight pin into the target center. This is known as holding . When aiming into the target center, the sight pin moves around as the muscles try to hold it steady. To release the arrow, the three fingers holding the bowstring allow the string to slip off the fingers at the same time. Maintain the position of the bow arm on release until the arrow hits the target. This is the follow through. Any movement will move the arrow. Head and body position should remain steady, while the drawing hand moves backward after the release. The archer then relaxes after each shot to allow the muscles to recover from the effort.
