Equipment and Accessories

There are three distinct kinds of bows. The traditional kind is called the long bow. It is made of a simple wooden bow of ‘D' shape section. The recurve bow has a flat rectangular section limbs made from attaching together laminated glass fibers, carbon fibers, ceramic, wood or foam. The compound bow has pulleys at the ends of the bow limbs with extra strings between them. It is smaller than a recurve bow and has more adjustable limbs that can be set to different strengths.

Arrows are usually made of either aluminum or carbon graphite, pointed at one end with feather fletchings at the other end. The curve and angle of application of the fletchings stabilizes and guides the arrow's flight.

There are quite a number of archery accessories. An arm guard is a leather or plastic guard worn on the inside of the bow arm used to protect the arm from the bowstring. The chest guard protects the chest and keeps clothing from getting caught by the string. A finger tab or shooting glove protects the fingers while drawing the bow. A quiver is a container for holding arrows. Release aids are mechanical hand triggers used in lieu of finger tabs. The bow sling is the adjustable leather strap attached to the bow. There is also the finger sling attached between the index finger and the thumb. The foot markers are placed in the ground to mark the position of the front of each foot on the shooting line.
