History

Track and field events, since the beginning of history were used to gauge skills in running, jumping and throwing. These skills were used in hunting and in war and were part of military training. Competitive human instincts led to contests to determine who could run the fastest and jump or throw the farthest.

Ancient records show games even before the first Olympics were organized to pit one against the other to find out the fastest, the strongest and the most agile of all. The contests have now evolved not only to include people involved in combat training but to everyone who wants to master once self and compete with another usually for the record of achievement.

Today, modern athletics events are organized around a 400 meter running tract. Running takes place on the track while field events such as hurdles, jumping and throwing often take place in the field in the center of the running track.

Some of the well-known governing bodies of athletic events are the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) for international amateur events, the USA Track and Field (USATF or USA T&F) for the United States and the less structured organization, the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) to promote road racing.
