Badminton Court and Equipment
Service Court – There are two kinds of service courts - singles service court and doubles service court – used depending on the game to be played. Racquet – The badminton racquet can be made of wood, steel, aluminum, or of carbon fiber composite. A good racquet is lightweight and has a good balance. Most professional players use the carbon fiber composite kind, which is very light but strong. For amateur players less expensive racquets made from lightweight metals usually suffice. Grip – There are two kinds of grip: synthetic and cloth. Synthetic grips offer superb friction while cloth grips offer more comfort and absorbs sweat very well. There is really no better grip between the two. Choice of grip depends on the player's preference. String – Although not many people are aware of it strings are strung at different tensions - from 80 to 130 newtons. The lower the tension used to for stringing, the more powerful the racquet will be. On the other hand, the higher the tension used for stringing, the greater the control of the racquet will be. Shuttlecock – The shuttlecock is traditionally made of cork and goose feathers but has been replaced with a plastic or rubber head and a plastic skirt. Shoes – Good badminton shoes offer a good grip to prevent slipping and aid in sudden dashes. They also offer good ankle support to lessen shock for jumping. |
