Brief History

Badminton came from the British game popular in the 1800s, called Battledores and Shuttlecocks, where children working together used paddles to toss around a shuttlecock. The objective of the game was to make sure that the shuttlecock never hit the ground. The game became known as Poona when British soldiers in Pune , India added a net and turned it into a competitive game. Then in 1860 the term badminton was coined by Isaac Spratt in his pamphlet “Badminton Battledore – a New Game”. Its first set of official rules was drafted in 1877 by the Bath Badminton Club and soon became very popular internationally. In 1934 the International Badminton Federation (IBF) was formed with nine countries as members. It reached the Olympics as a demonstration game in 1972 but it wasn't until 1992 that it became a Summer Olympic sport.
