Basketball Team Positions
In professional basketball, every team must have players in the following positions:
Point Guard
The point guards are the swiftest players in the team. They are usually the leader on the floor and control the play of the team. Though they are generally the smallest in the team, there are exceptions such as Ervin "Magic" Johnson. They are usually the best dribblers and the team relies on them to get the ball up and down the court quickly.
Shooting Guard
Usually taller than the point guard, these players are normally the best shooters, even from long distances. His task is to get himself into a position where he can make the shot and do so or find another open player who can make the shot.
Small Forward
These players are usually your jack of all trades in the game. They need to be swift and dribble well. They can shoot well from long distances or from the baseline. They do need to be good rebounders and great at passing the ball.
Power Forward
Usually the second tallest on the team, this player rarely makes distance shots. This player is normally assigned near the basket and is very important for rebounds and lay ups.
Center
Like the power forward, the center is more concerned with short range shots. Normally the biggest member of the team, speed is rarely their forte. They are very important in the team's defense as they are the ones who are in the area nearest the basket and can make the rebounds.
