Components and Equipments

The bowling alley (lane) is one of the most important components of the game. It is divided into five sections – the players' area, the approach, the lane, the gutter and the pins. The players' area is the space where a bowler waits for his turn to play. The approach is the runaway to the lane where the player picks up his drive to deliver the bowling ball. The lane is made up of polished wood between 41 and 42 inches wide and measures 60 feet from the foul line (black line that separates the approach and the lane) to the head pin. On both sides of the lane is the gutter where the ball falls if it is not kept on the lane. At the end of the lane, ten pins are set up in a triangle form.

Bowling balls may be made out of rubber composite or plastic. They weigh from 6 pounds to 10 pounds. There are basically three holes in a bowling ball, two for the fingers and one hole for the thumb. Sometimes, there is a fourth hole, the balance hole.

Comfortable bowling shoes help a lot to improve a player's performance. Special bowling shoes with slide soles work best.

Bowling gloves help support the wrist. It helps improve player score.
