Without a doubt Formula One Racing is one of the most well known competitions in the world. Formula One is known to many as F1, and is also called Grand Prix racing. Formula One races are held all over the world although the main center has traditionally been Europe. Formula One is considered to be one of the most expensive sports in the world. Daytona 500 is the most popular race for stock cars. It is part of the NASCAR series and is held every year at the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach. The race is 500 miles long, with 200 laps. Today, the Daytona 500 is considered the “Superbowl of NASCAR” as it attracts countless spectators and sponsors. Every Memorial Day weekend, a mass of racing enthusiasts gather at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to witness the annual Indianapolis 500 Mile Race. More popularly known as the Indy500, this race features open-wheel cars. The Indy500 was first run in 1911 and has since then been known to be the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing.” A world famous race held in France is called the 24 Hours of Le Mans (24 Heures du Le Mans). This is quite different from the other popular races as it features endurance racing. It is held every year at the Circuit de la Sarthe near Le Mans, France. The 24 Hours of Le Mans was first run in 1923. The winner of the race is the car which has gone the longest distance in 24 hours. |
