Brief History

The first ever car race can be traced back to the invention of automobiles that run on petrol. The French magazine Le Petit Journal is recorded to have organized the first car race in 1894. The purpose of the contest was to determine which car had the best performance.

Car racing was introduced in the United States a year later. In November 2, 1895, Frank Duryea won the first race in Chicago, Illinois. This first race featured both petrol-fuelled cars and electric powered cars.

From the 1800s to the early 1900s, France was the leader in the car racing world. It was only in 1903 that the French government put a ban on open road racing due to the death of Marcel Renault. By the mid-1900s, other car manufacturers entered the racing scene. DelageDelage, Auto Union, Mercedes-Benz, Delahaye and Bugatti started producing cars with powerful engines and light body weight.
