Equipment and Positioning
Chess comprises of two players that requires 32 chess pieces and a board which has 64 squares with contrasting colors. These 64 demarcated squares are divided further into eight horizontal ranks numbered from one to eight and eight vertical files from letters a-h. This allows the squares to be identified. This method of identifying is called algebraic notation which is used to keep scores. This method also identifies each chess pieces by a letter (King="K" Queen="Q" Rook="R" Bishop="B" Knight='N").
Chess has two identical armies of contrasting colors. The lighter-colored army (white) and the darker-colored army (black). Each army is has its own chess pieces that has its own positioning which serves distinct functions. The positioning of the board should have the lighter-colored square on the lower right-hand corner when facing the player.
The Rooks are positioned on the corners. The Knights are positioned next to the Rooks. The Bishops are situated right beside the Knights and the King and Queen right after that. It should be noted that, the Queen is positioned on her color – white queen on the white square and the black queen on the black square. The eight pawns are then positioned on each player's second row.
