Glossary of Terms

Belayer - a person who secures the rope and provides a safe climbing experience for the climber
Belay on - refers to the belayer's response to the climber who is preparing to mount the wall
Boulder - means to climb the horizontal wall
Bouldering wall - refers to the horizontal climbing wall
Carabiner - A metal hook similar to a padlock that is used to attach a climber to the climbing rope
Climb - refers to the question the climber asks the belayer before mounting the wall
Climb on - the response of the belayer to the climber if the belayer is ready for the climb to begin
Descent - the climb down
Elevation - the height above the earth's surface
Figure 8 knot - the knot tied to secure the climber to the rope
Grigri - a metal device that allows the climbing rope to move in only one direction so that it acts as a brake if the climber should slip
Harness - refers to the safety gear a climber wears around the bottom and thighs made of nylon webbing which is adjustable to fit snuggly to the climber, so the climber can be attached safely to the climbing rope
Helmet - a protective gear for the head
Hold - the location on the rock face or wall face where the climber puts his hands and/or feet to assist in the ascent
On Belay - the first question the climber asks as he or she prepares to climb
Rope - the safety equipment that connects the climber to the belayer
Take - the climber's words that signal to the belayer that he or she is ready to come down from the climb
