Game Mechanics

“The Laws of Cricket” is the bible of this game. Published by the Marylebone Cricket Club in London , it lays down the actual rules of cricket. Additional rules and regulations are documented by the International Cricket Council. Both documents are complex articles. A simplified general description of how this game is played is given here.

A bat-and-bowl game, each side has eleven players. Teams take turns to bat in successive innings in order to score runs, while the rival team fields in its attempt to put a stop to the batting team's innings. At the start of the innings, all eleven players of the fielding team go out to field, while only two batsmen of the batting team go out to bat with the rest waiting off the field for their turn to bat.

When each team has batted an equal number of innings, the team with the most runs wins. The number of innings, either one or two, is a condition chosen before starting the game. The number of wickets that have fallen is also a winning factor.

The total number of runs for the innings is the sum of the individual batsmen's scores plus the extras (e.g. no ball, wide, byes, and leg byes). A batman is given four (4) runs when striking the ball that lands within the playing area, but travels over the boundary without landing. But if the batsman strikes this ball over the boundary without landing within the playing area, six (6) runs are given.
