Rules for Scoring a Hit

Rules for fencing vary from nation to nation but there are some core rules. A narrow strip is drawn on the playing area, a minimum of 1.5 meters wide. The fencers pick up their weapons (the same kind) and try to hit each other, all the while trying to remain untouched. The winner is the first one to hit as many targets as the bout (match) requires. In Epee fencing, any hit counts on any part of the opponent's body so long as the point (tip) of the weapon hits target. If the fencers hit each other simultaneously, both of them get a touch. In saber fencing, right of way, target area and footwork are implemented. The touch with right of way rules is awarded to the fencer who hits while maintaining right of way. To have right of way, a fencer must control the action. It is a game of attacks and defense. Parrying, launching an attack, tapping the opposing blade are methods of gaining right of way. Touches beyond the upper torso, head and arms do not count. Fleching is illegal. Foil fencing uses also the right of way but a limited target area. The target area for a foil is the torso not including the head or arm. Any touch off target is not valid. Also, only the point of the blade can score a valid touch.
