Game Basics
There are two common forms of golf, namely match play and stroke play. In a match play, two golfers or two teams play holes one at a time. The golfer with the lowest number of strokes wins that hole. In cases where two players have the same number of strokes, then the hole is "halved" or declared a draw. The golfer with the most number of holes wins the game. Meanwhile, in a stroke play the golfer or the team with the least number of strokes all together wins.
In the professional league, golfers refer to the four biggest tournaments the "majors" and are played about the same time each year. The four majors are the Masters, the U.S. Open, the Open Championship or the British Open and the PGA Championship.
There are a lot of things that one needs to learn about golf, like the rules of the game, the handicap systems, the various techniques and so on. Because of its growing number of followers, numerous publications are dedicated to golf and can easily be found in just about any bookstore, library or shops selling magazines.
