Glossary

Artificial turf – synthetic surface used in field hockey playing fields
Assist – pass that sets up a goal
Backhand - shot or pass made from the side of the body opposite the stick hand
Blade - flat section of a hockey stick that makes contacts with the ball or puck
Blind pass - pass made without looking at the target
Deflection - shot or pass that changes direction when it strikes a player, skate, or stick
Goal – cage wherein the opposing team tries to shoot a ball or puck into; a score worth 1 point when the ball or puck goes inside the opposing team's goal cage
Goalie – player whose job is to defend their team's goal
Puck – flat round disk which needs to go inside the opposing team's goal for a team to make a score
Rink – playing area for hockey
