Gait – the pace of a horse

handicap race – a race wherein better horses have to have handicaps, such as carrying more weight, in order for all the horses to have equal chances of winning

maiden race – a race wherein all the riders have never won a race. This race does not take “handicaps” into consideration. Usually, the horses are less than 2 years old.

stakes race – a race wherein the horses are of a higher class and with bigger prizes at stake.

steeplechase – a race which is run over long distances, usually from 2 to 4.5 miles.

Sulkies – two-wheeled carts pulled by horses in harness racing.
