History

Horseracing has been around for as long as anyone can remember. It might be that our ancestors, upon discovering wild horses, inevitably yearned to tame them and use them for their purposes. The people of Central Asia were recorded to breed and raise racehorses about 6,000 years ago. During those times, the use of horses for leisure was confined to a certain group of people. The common people usually used their horses for more mundane activities such as farming and transportation.
In the UK , horseracing became a professional sport in the 12 th century. This resulted from the discovery of Arabian horses by the Crusaders. Bred with English work horses, the Thoroughbred was produced. Horseracing then became a sport for royalty all throughout the middle Ages. In 1750, the Jockey Club was formed and rules for horseracing were set down. Alongside with horseracing rules, breeding rules were drawn up.
In America , thoroughbred racing did not come into existence until Royalists and Cavaliers were forced out of England by Oliver Cromwell. It was only in 1730 that the first thoroughbred horse was brought to the US . With the knowledge of their African slaves, the early colonists were able to grow their stock. Since then horseracing flourished into what it is now.
