Speed Skating

If what you want to see are the fastest skaters on ice, then speed skating is what you should watch. This sport gets its origin from the canal races in the Netherlands . The rules are simple. Complete the specified course (measured in distance) in the shortest amount of time.
The first World Championships for this event was held in the Netherlands in 1889. It has been part of the winter Olympics since the inception of the said competition in 1924. It is truly a world favorite event and is one of the highest participation events in the Special Olympics.
There are speed skating competitions for individuals as well as teams. Most events are currently held on indoor tracks, as is the case with the Olympics. This includes short track speed skating, long track speed skating and team pursuit.
By no means though is the sport limited to the ovals or to the indoors. There are wonderful marathons such as the Elfstedentocht or Eleven Cities Tour held in the Netherlands . This event is held on natural ice.
