Squash Court and Equipment

Being an indoor game, the squash court includes four walls. The ceiling is considered out of bounds. Depending on whether it is a singles or doubles match, the court size may vary. The floor area measures at 32 x 21 feet. The front wall is 15 feet high while the back wall is 7 feet high. The two side walls slope downwards from the front to meet the back wall, which is usually made of clear glass.

The basic equipment for squash is a racquet. Unlike in tennis, racquets for squash are more standardized. Squash racquets are usually made up of metals and/or composites and have synthetic strings. The standard racquet is 27 inches long and weighs between 4 and 7 ounces.

Balls are made of rubber and can be of different colors. Dots are placed on the ball to indicate how bouncy it is. The bounce determines as to what level of play a ball is suited for. For the standard yellow dot ball, the specifications are as follow: 40.00 mm in diameter (give or take 0.5) and 24.0 grams in weight (give or take 1.0).

In addition to the ball and racquet, players need eye protection. This is due to the enclosed game area. Unbeknown to many, squash balls can reach speeds of over 100 mph.
