Brief History

Squash is said to have been developed at the Harrow School near London . As the game was derived from Racquets, squash was most probably played on courts used for that purpose. It was in the late 1800s when the first court was built specifically for squash.

Prior to the 20 th century, squash was only played in academic institutions in England . It eventually caught on and began to be popular in some private clubs. By this time, it had become popular with British military officers as well.

For a long time, squash was considered an “exclusive” game for the middle and upper classes. The unwritten rules regarding players were relaxed in the 1950s and squash reached its peak of popularity in the 1980s. Today, squash is not as popular as it used to be. However, it still has a large following in some areas, specifically Australia , some parts of Europe and America , as well as Asia .
